27056 mascot given to me by Micheal Cort, an excellent mascot by an standards, this will be on show everytime the loco is out on service trains Early January and D5401 first test rum since 2007 October, loco stood at Rothley D5401 stood at Lougborough during the winter gala event in January Taken at Swithland Reservoir during January Winter Gala One of the thousands of small jobs done during 2009, changed crankcase breather gauze filter Fabruary 7th, surrounded by snow and low level sun light, taken at lougborough yard before the 12:15 departure The state of the AWS wiring under Cab no2, this will be replaced at a later date April and the failed AVR which has been problematic all year and it was removed during the April diesel gala after melting resistors together John Pepper repairing a spare AVR for 27056 during a saturday evening in April, the unit has worked very well considering it has been stored for 25 years During testing that same evening using a variable 110volt supply Cab No1 DSD foot pedal and housing removed for reair and repaint, taken during early June The damaged cab no1 DSD housing, this was damaged during BR days New spare parts for the fire sensor system in the engine room roof space The original intercooler core after two months soak in a barrel of diesel was pressure washed at Lougborough yard in early June A Brake selector switch cover in Cab No2 The replacement brake selector switch cover, this was a spare that was stripped, cleaned and painted in Deep Bronze Green The heavily cleaned and painted DSD pedal for Cab No1 in late June The replaced items in late June March 2009 and a short visit to the NVR diesel gala, the 27 sitting on the turntable with a Class 14 shunter for company Taken from the Cab showing Class 40 D206 in a double header towards Peterborough, this is one excellent pristine machine Later on the same day, another double header with 47270 The mascot out on show at Peterborough station during the layover period before departure to Wansford

I sure this will put the owner in serve debt and divorced but at least he will have a working GWR Hall one day..... A few days after arrival on the 3rd February 2008 A rusty Backhead A rusty but nearly complete tender in BR Blue!!!!!!! A view from the top of the boiler, It needs a protective lick of paint me thinks.... A proud owner... A random view of the cylinders. Much time will be spent on collecting and producing the many parts required to make a complete GWR Hall Taken in Late May 2008. Absolutely no closer to becoming a working example of the GWR Hall class but at least it is being rubbed down and coated with proper protective paint to stop it rusting anymore!!!

This machine arrived just before Xmas 2007 and left in February 2008. Sunday 20 January 2008: For a very short period we gained the use of working and well presented Type 3 BRCW Class 33 Diesel Electric machine 33053 in BR Blue Livery. This machine arrived just before Xmas 2007 and left in February 2008.

During 33053 use during Xmas 2007 it become very evident that this too had sprung a leak in the Settling tanks but on the other side compared to 27056. Early January and the offending was stripped and removed The radiator frame is complete but was concreted in which we suspect to stop a old water leaak. the frame will be crack tested very soon The tank was removed from the loco through the only door big enough, the centre engine room door in Early january 2008 and after testing it was found to be a small piece of wasted pipe The air ducting in one piece, unlike 27056 which was in two. this is a sod to move and was left in the engine room As ever the exhauster had to be removed to get the tank out. The rate we are going we are getting very good this line of work. The tank. has been repaired, leak tested and found to be in sound condition A bit of painting to do and the tank will be installed on the 27th January The element frame has been crack tested repaired, and pressure tested to 25PSI and found to be sound also. A coat of paint later and will be put into the loco the coming week 10th February 2008. After 3 hours engine running the quite4 tick of the air system while the engine cools down after testing of the repaired settling tanks 33053 seen at the Battlefield Rly prior to movement to the Mid Hants Rly for an extended loan period on Mid June 2008

The Radiator area of the engine room, work has started and commenced degreasing and cleaning ready for painting The space from the The other space left by a removed settling tank, will be easier to clean. Both areas will be protected iwth proper paint 3rd January a bloody cold day, too cold to paint so myself and Martin Harris did a spot of tidying and removed all small parts to the workshop for cleaning and painting One tank has been cut open and found to be worth scrap so replacements are required The reason why.... doubled skinned to effect a easy repair this isn't a very good way to repair rotted platework. A section of bottom chennel after being removed, seen better days me think!!!! Two broken BRCW Machines with the same problem, leaky settling tanks. This must be the only railway to be so unlucky Painting has been slow due to the cold weather but we are ploding on The left side showing the prepartion work involved, making sure we never do this again on this loco 26th was spent cleaning the radiator fan. This picture was taken after 2 hours of wirebrush cleaning After a lick of primer paint it looks miles better A rather quite period, mainly being spent on cleaning and painting small items To show the tediously show process of cleaning and painting minor parts, I took this after spending a few hours undercoat metal strips Water fillers and Water overflows, The fillers have replacement valves and the overflow need replacements also. Thanks to the cold wet weather slow progress is being made but until the weather improves an external work will have to wait.... Time is being spent aswell preparing the first radiator frame for new parts and painting. thanks to the poor weather progress is slow After needle gunning the second tank to determine the condition of the base plate.... the result not good so this tank is also being replaced 16th March and the pre-cut metal sheets arrive on site and long process of building the tanks can begin Side A radiator fame, all cleaned up and just requires a small amount of painting and one stud to replace on the end closest to the picture and then this can be pressure tested Another view of the same One finished painted fan The walls inside the loco are done and now we awaited the completed tanks An unusal view of the fan and cowling all painted and ready to be re-assembled rubbing down and painting the few remaining parts, this is Side B main cover for access to the radiator elements The insides of Side A new settling tank, at this point requires final welding and then electroplating The other half of Side A settling tank, apparently the water drain pipes were a pig to bend to the required shape!!!! Old and new on display in early May for a school display Alas, during the periods of no painting, the Train brake cut off valve and the SSF units have been replaced with ones that actually work!!!! The reason why the original SSF unit didn't work, some what rusty in the box The best thing I could do with the knackered unit considering, also the warm cup of tea helped dry out the electrical components The second radiator frame has now started to be attacked with grinders with wire wheels and after two hours work and a little paint, the result The last tank receiving a final cut of the top side flange Two completed Brand Spanking new settling tanks on the 18th June 2008 These tanks were made by the engineering firm T&H engineering based at the N&LR After a coat of Williamsons primer, they just need pressure testing and a final lick of paint At last in late June the first water test of these new tanks was done An encouraging sign As expected with the amount of welding done, this was the only major leak found in both tanks The second radiator frame, work has started on stripping, painting. this frame needs some sheared studs removing. The second settling tank inlate June on a water test 25th July after some addtional welding both tanks and the only completed radiator frame were pressure tested to 20PSI and these were deemed a success So only a lick of paint required. This is an unusual view not seen outside a Sulzer Type 2 an assembled radiator frame and settling tank on July 25th A picture of the floor in D5401 on 5th August. The loco is now ready to receive the new tanks and the tanks are also finished with just a date to organise the long awaited re-assembly The space awaiting a new settling tank 16th Aug Two overhauled traction motor brush boxes repaired by Nigel Ball of the T1LC group for conducting a high standard repair The loco had to be moved by pinch bar so that the plant machinery could get close enough to get the new tanks in the loco Ta da!!! as if by magic a new settling tank in place. That took some two hours with much swearing/cursing/shounting to get those tanks in place!!! D5401 steaming!!!! The 27 stood on the rear of a leicester bound steam service by the 8f 48305 D5401 after arriving on a freight train from Quorn. I have replaced both Main Res/supply gauges with two well cleaned and calibrated ones. Once the April diesel gala is over I intend to start the cab repair/repaint 10th April at Quorn top yard. D5401 was used for some minor shunting Later the same day one of D5401 booked passenger turns, standing at Loughborough waiting the D5401 washed and polished on the 26th April ready for the diesel gala same again but lined up with 47117,31???, 20048,20098,25035 27th April on shed again for another FTR Tom Tighe's legs during the Fitness to Run exam standing next to ROD 63601 Awaiting departure on the 27th April Sitting at Loughborough during the layover Standing side by side 27056 and 45125 And again, you get the idea from cab No1 heading towards Leicester North Station John Pepper was driving I got the chance to drive the pair of class 20s and this was the view from 20048 An outside view of 20048 A double header with father and son driving D5401 and D5185 respectably The insides of a EP Valve which was stripped for inspection and replacement of 0 seals The left Air Pass/Goods, Middle Vac Pass Timing, Right Air Pass Timing. All of these are EP valves connected with the Westinghouse Brake System One EP Valve Another type of EP Valve A picture of a Vacuum Operated Isolating Valve. This unit has been stripped and overhauled as part of the continuing process of finding the braking issue Not strictly a heritage diesel but while I was working of D5401 this was parked at Loughborough for attention side view of the same Cab view of the same HST A pretty name plate...... wonder how much that you fetch on Ebay? Any ebay item i believe !!!!! The Brake Application Unit is being replaced by a spare Part missing..... the time was taken to apply a lick of new paint while the unit was off replacement fitted with clean paint behind it Standing at Quorn's Up advanced starter signal for 40 minutes due to driver at Rothley being taken ill. Running around at Leicester North on the 7th July Waiting at Leicester North on the 7th July D5401 & D5185 evening sunlight at Loughborough on 7th July after a good days running The blue fault lense being new. The same frame fitted in cab No1 In early January Brand new woodern edging for both driver's and secondman side windows The deadmans foot pedal has been removed and cleaned and now re-fitted, this hopefullygoes a long way to re-commissioning of the said system A basic change of every air filters in the engine room also during january This model of D5401 was released over the christmas period based upon our very own D5401. I now own my own model of D5401 and I must say version is very detailed and an excellent example New diaphragms for the AV2 vacuum system. As you can see the difference in the old and new ones This was the cause of the DSD system not working. This EP valve has since been repaired and the system re-commissioned The place where Exhauster No1 use to live!!! It was re-moved for repairs to be made as it had collected alot of carbon and nearly seized. As you can see it was split from the motor to make is easier to remove The Northey Exhauster in question, after a large amount of stripping down and cleaning it is ready to be refitted after some minor work is done to the motor While the exhauster was out I took the oppotunity to clean the bed plate and apply some protective paint D5401 at Pitsford in early March Early March I have just undercoated the bufferbeam before applying a top coat a few days later A random view of D5401, 764 and 2104 in Pitsford Yard D5401 and two other low loaders in Quorn yard on the 15-3-07 A Network Rail water carrier being unloaded A bit rare 7 people making a ramp and all Allelly's employee's, needless to say D5401 was off the low loader in 20 minutes A general view of quorn yard on the 15th March Now unloaded and running waiting to propel the water carriers to Loughborough The two gents I must thanks for getting D5401 ready at Pitsford and sorting the movement of the loco to Quorn. John and Andy Pepper (caretakers of D5185) Getting ready to move to Loughborough At Loughborough station for the first time in about five years 25035 and 27056 together on the same railway 27056 waiting a FTR from Tom Tighe Both working and both in respectable paint finishes and togther. At this point we had just coupled them togther to start testing of the multi jumpers The radiator settling tanks decided to leak and this means a hell of alot of removing the water cooler group and this was taken after the elements were removed and the internal air duct was loose but not removed some of the now stored radiator elements which will be tested and replaced as required after removing the roof hatch on B side. this hasn't seen major attention since 1982 and it shows. it is mostly flaky paint which looks worse than it is Martin Harris was in the process of starting to remove B side elements With A side done and with day light it was then windy standing here... But much work needed and new studs aswell. A view of the engine room on the 19th November 07 both sections of the air duct removed and a little more work and both cooler groups can be removed in the next few weeks Side A cooler group nearly ready to be removed An unusal view from the platform, as you can see right the way through the locomotive 27056 resting at Pitsford station 19th Nov 07 To show how much hard it was parting the radiator frame from the settling tank, we managed to destroy two knuckle joints doing this Alas success one radiator frame free from the loco, Two free radiator frames, which are now stored pending cleaning, repairs and painting The settling tanks still place The mud was around three inches deep!!!! The state of the internals on a 25 year old settling tank on a class 27 The engineering team have been contracted to assess and repair the tanks as required This was taken just before Xmas showing this tank partly needle gunned and so far 7 small holes have been found in the base

The last of the external bodywork welding that needed doing. With this done I can finally finish to outside The other area that has been welded and as you can tell 5401 is getting very dirty so I spent a few hours washing the loco on sunday 29th January The space the triple pump use to occupy this area will now be degreased and painted before the pump is returned Parts of the coolant and fuel system from the triple pump. These will be cleaned and painted before refitting D5401 on a Thomas weekend on May bank holiday. Ths bloke giving a funny face is Martin Percy who has done alot of electrical repairs to the loco Another shot of the loco going away. As you can see I still haven't painted the bogie frames The spare cylinder heads have been pulled from store and been stripped of any components and pressure washed by myself ready for T&H engineering to overhaul The is another view of one of the 6 heads that were pressure washed ready to be overhauled and fitted to D5401 during the winter layover ready for April/May 07 The builders plates and shed plates ready to be fitted under both drivers side very soon Finally started work in the cab amoung many other jobs being done to improves the locos performance for the future A general view od D5401 early November. as you can see I have added stickers and the plates wil finish the look very well A sad face. This was put on as I have had alot of problems with the oil pump as later photos will show A cab shot. All I had time to do was a tidy up and a quick hoover and wipe down but a full repair and repaint will be done soon Taken during shunting on 1st May 2006 D5401 with 31298 other than rust and livery difference, A profile difference in cab build A loaded test run with 350 tons and with the turbocharger wound up I was sursprised at little smoke it made One stripped blown triple pump. A spare unit is being overhauled by an local electrical motor specialist. the unit has been stripped for reuseable parts and now placed in storage The coolant housing off the triple. A new body and impellor has been sourced and fitted once the motor is returned The oil pump to the left and fuel pump to the right. These items came off the blown up pump and spare unit will be fitted to the replacement triple pump The area for the triple pump has been degreased and painted while waiting for the motor to be returned, but a delay in repairs has now added another 3 weeks for repairs The gear box of the triple pump which will have to wait until the motor is returned overhauled oil and fuel pumps, also waiting to be fitted to the motor a general picture of 5401. The way weather is going it will be a few months before the painting is finished and for the triple pump to return. So little or no progress!!!!!!!! A BIG hole where the cab floor use to be. Soon to be welding Sunday the 12th March, so i am told The cab floor all welded up and very well done by our contract welder Johnny Zulu. My thanks to Mick Hooper and Johnny for doing an excellent job. All I need to do is clean and paint the area. Today (14th March) the triple pump was returned to the loco after overhaul and is in a lovely blue colour!!! About an hour later a large chunk of the bits were returned to the pump D5401 on a passenger train!!! This was due to failure of the 08 shunter and flat batteries on 31298. This was the only working diesel. D5401 first solo passenger run for a number of years. I have recently finished the white banding line and Gary Austin added the numbers transfers. The triple pump works very well with just one minor leak from the oil pump. The batteries on the other hand are needing some attention which will result in replacement of individual cells due to failure The secondmans area in cab No2 finished other then replacing the floor and the seat that also has been overhauled. This will be needed as the loco is required for service on the Thomas weekend on the first bankholiday of the month Cab restoration has started with cleaning up of the drivers/secondmans side windows. This is shown stripped and being cleaned ready for reassembly The windows that have also been cleaned and ready to be reassembled The blown triple pump. There is no signs say that why it went bang, but this proberly counted for the low oil pressure before starting!!! Another view of the blown triple pump before the coolant is drained and the pump is dismantled to be removed the pump for repairs The five handrails removed late last year are finally being repainted before being refitted to the locomotive. Which will make my life easier to get in and out of the locomotive! As can be seen the The door on the left is the drivers cab No1 to be changed with the one I found in store on the right. This still has BR blue/yellow and green paint on it Taken when fitted. This will be painted to mix in the locomotive when the weather gets warmer Taken during December 05 By Martin Percy who re-wound the coil for the Master Control relay this was the cause of the failure during the November 05 diesel gala Another shot of the re-winding taken by M.Percy The finished coil taken by M.Percy The finished article and a general clean up of the contactor was done aswell taken by M.Percy The first of the replacement buffers fitted once the buffer beam has been scrapped and prepared the rest can be painted red The other side bogies have been painted and all I need to do is the minor pipes and boxes in there colours Both the 31 and 27 running for a little shunt the thursday before the second bank holiday weekend in May D5401 ready for the last bank holiday weekend service train in May. Only the replacement door spoils the scene (note to self must get that painted!!!) Finally I repainted the changed cab door to undercoat. Thsi is now marking the final area to be attacked witha paint brush After about two hours and alot of swearing and cursing Gary Austin and myself managed to apply the two BR logos. I thought they look good and go a long way to finishing the paintwork D5401 having the last two buffers changed on the 16th July 2006. this view with one buffer missing The plant machinery being operated by Mick Hooper and Simon Jenkins were helping with changing the buffers and I want to pass my thanks for their assitance during the hot blistering day

The heavily caked Inlet side A zoomed in look, which appears to be the main cause for such a smokey power engine.. The outlet side, once cleaned we hope the loco will be back to full strength (fingers crossed) Saturday 13th May 06 D5185 is awaiting repair sandwiched between 48305 and the 47 D5185 under the bridge Another shot under the bridge John pepper trying to refit the Brake isolator valve back in and praying it would work. Which it did after being stripped four times 25265 and 25035 finally together stabled at Loughborough A 25 from a 25!!!! The first double header 25 in the midlands for a very long time and this was taken once under way These are the gents who you need to thank for getting 5185 serviceable. Father and son John and Andrew Pepper. Without their efforts 5185 won't even be useable. If you see them buy them a cup of tea or something! The locomotive was brought into the platform for work to start bringing the locomotive to working order starting on the 13th february In just a short period a new coat of paint is applied to tidy up its appearance This was taken about 2 minutes after starting and before the engine was stopped with 6 pots not firing the smoke was beginning to clear. But futher repairs are required before another attempt is made to start the engine again Arrival of 56098 Trying to get the lorry in position to reverse down the footpath Did try and get the whole length of the loco in a picture and this was the result! Starting to get dark and it was still on the lorry One cab of the loco and a cab of the lorry Another dusk shot 20 minutes later and it was slowly being edged of the lorry Taken from the 08 cab before I had to leave taken on the 10th November One cab, a little blurred! Again alittle blurred but nearly the same as 47205 The electrical compartment on the 10/11/05 The engine room on the 10/11/05 taken from the otherside of the engine. The replacement cab shaft is being obtained and hopefully should be fitted in the next month or so 56098 first moves today 26/9/06. A night time view of this signalbox during the santa special season 2006 Half a DMU restored to a high standard 45118 during a staurday afternoon shunt! 764 SIR GYLES ISHAM is one of the small shunters 5374 during a return to service after reapirs were complete 2104 having boiler repairs. Which resulted in a complete strip down due the nature of the repair 5374 VANGUARDduring the same day The railways new shunter which belongs to FMRail PWM951 and No1 taken on the 15-9-05 Pitsford & Brampton signalbox taken on the 15-9-05 while being repainted Bubblecar 55001 and 7646 NORTHAMPTON on the 15-9-05. Notice the bubblecar is in black and not green!!! 2104 cab waiting the better weather for a repair and repaint. Then to be rejoined with the locomotive Spare axle boxes being taken apart for inspection prior to use. Heating torches used as many years of rust made things difficult Brand spanking new dragbox for 5374 Vanguard. This was all designed by Mick hooper. The items were put together to for testing and then dismantled prior to reassembly in the locomotive peckett 2104 has had all the mechanical and outstanding boiler work completed. Now a hydraulic test is needed when the temperature goes above 7 degress and final re-assembly all before easter!!! Another item finished on 5374 is the front step board Tkh 7646 in the yard at the NLR. This WILL last many years to come Embsay & Bolton Abbey Rly thomas engine on hire to us for our OCT 05 event Cylinder heads, liners, pistons and lots of oil for 31289 rebuild taken on 21 Oct 05 Just as the rebuild started on the 21st Showing the inspection covers removed on the engine block on 31289 Our latest resident very useful the engine moved to make easy access for the crane 5374 Vanguard has had it new water tanks fitted and is in the final stretch of repairs for the 2006 season which will be expected to work most of the season due to 2104 being repaired 2104 has had all it mechanical work finished. The boiler has been pressure tested and it has been found a number of boiler stays are leaking. A decision is to be made by the boiler inspector soon 08 shunter, taken on the 7th April. This has been relaid during the winter as the approach was to sharp for anything other than a 0-4-0 wheelbase. With months of hard work by Graham peacock and most of the working volunteers it was completed recently. But essential work like this delayed other project as the work force is getting smaller each year. 5374 Vanguard is the only steam locomotive in service and is providing one end of the top & tail Santa Special service through out December 2005 Tkh Vanguard rear air tank removed on the 3rd January 06

Showing the primed frames top coat is going to be applied The last window to be fitted. This has taken longer than I expected due to extra welding work was needed The new internal guttering. A little extra work is needed before it is painted and the air filters are replaced. The crankshaft with no labryinth seal. This is in the process of being rematalled One of two steam heat gauges returned to the locomotive after being missing for a period of years!!!. This is the finished product. The completed brand new internal guttering painted by special industrial paint to make it last a lot longer Another finshed product one of the fuel gauges refitted Not the best shot because of the sun. But it show the metal strips fitted to hold the firbe glass in place One finshed labryinth seal waiting to be fitted to the locomotive once time allows. This repair has been done by white metal being bonded to aluminum All this week I have been rubbing down the body ready for the first top coat. This was taken on wednesday afternoon after a whole day painting in the burning heat!!! It is really looking the part at long last. Some more welding to be done then a second coat of paint and then transfers and plates will be added These are the spare buffers that are shortly going away to be overhauled and exchanged with the existing set on the engine eventually!!! Taken on the 4th Oct showing the labrinyth seal being fitted and its interesting showing how it works!!! Hooray!!!! Taken on the 10th Oct showing the engine running and a very clean exhaust after 6 months of silence The chance was taken for a light engine test on the 10th Oct and this has shown a number of faults which will be sorted not alot of external painting is left to to, only the lining and transfers. I hope to have done by the diesel gala (Properbly won't happen, but I can aim for it!!!)
